What Do Milk Percentages Really Mean?
What are Milk Fat Percentage Ratings?
You’re likely familiar with different milk percentages, including skim, 1%, 2%, and Whole, but what these percentages actually mean is often less clear.
These percentages refer to the total amount of fat in milk by weight. Milk percentages are not rated on a scale with 100% milk fat being the highest option, but rather it is based on the fat content of raw milk.
Directly from the udder, milk contains anywhere from 3-4% milk fat, meaning that “full-fat” or Whole Milk really only contains up to 4% milk fat. Drinking whole milk does not mean that you are drinking 100% milk fat. Another way to think about it is that Whole Milk is 96% fat-free!
Whole Milk
On average, Whole Milk from supermarket brands contains 3.25-3.5% milk fat. Most bigger dairies standardize their Whole Milk to be within this range.
Our Morning Fresh Dairy Whole Milk contains 4% milk fat on average. We do not standardize the exact percentage, but keep the natural fat content produced by the cow. Slight variations can occur seasonally. Our Whole Milk naturally contains a higher fat percentage compared to other brands because of the good health and happiness of our herd!
2% Milk
2% Milk contains 2% milk fat, about half of what is found in whole milk. 2% is also referred to as Reduced Fat Milk. In addition to our standard 2% Milk, we also offer a Lactose-Free 2% Milk option.
1% Milk
1% Milk contains 1% milk fat, about a quarter of what is found in whole milk. 1% is also referred to as Low Fat Milk.
Skim Milk
Skim Milk contains 0% milk fat and is also referred to as Fat Free Milk.
